Proposed changing info, JPEG

At the subject JPEG of this page it's written: "However, if the original file is in JPEG, it generally makes no sense to convert it to PNG: converting a lossy compression into a “lossless” format doesn't buy you anything since the “loss” already occurred in the original, and doing so will only increase the file size (any edits, however, should probably be saved as PNG as well as JPEG)."
I don't agree totally that there is no advantage to save a JPEG (first save) as PNG to stop losing even more information. Every time you open and save a JPEG image it first recreates the previously lost information and then upon saving even more information is lost than what was lost in the first save. This is an ongoing spiral of losing more and more information which results in an increasingly degeneration of the image for each open-save.
I propose the text above to be changed to:
"However, if the original file is in JPEG, it generally makes no sense to convert it to PNG: converting a lossy compression into a “lossless” format doesn't buy you anything since the “loss” already occurred in the original, and doing so will only increase the file size (any edits, however, should probably be saved as PNG). But be aware that every time a JPEG file is opened and saved the degeneration is increased, so in that sense saving it as a PNG or other not lossy format prevents an image to deteriorate.
It is always important to check your settings in any digital camera so that the quality of the (first) saved JPEG is set to 100% (highest quality-minimum lost) as the default mostly is 90%." --always ping me-- Goran tek-en (talk) 19:40, 23 August 2021 (UTC)

User:Goran tek-en I don't know man, I have assumed that checking the "use quality settings from original image" in GIMP is lossless for the parts of the image you have not touched, especially for the photos without chroma subsampling. That's the opinion of https://photo.stackexchange.com/a/99605 as well. Artoria2e5 contribs 06:04, 16 June 2023 (UTC)

MOV and HEIC

Can someone suggest procedures for converting MOV to either WebM or ogg formats and HEIC to either JPEG or PNG? (I assume the preference is to convert HEIC to JPG, but I don't know. I need to do it right now, and can't find how. The latest version of GIMP, 2.10.24, wouldn't do it.)

I suggest FFmpeg for converting video or audio, and ImageMagick for converting images. Both are cross-platform open-source command-line utilities, and both handle a very large number of formats. --Zundark (talk) 08:58, 15 January 2022 (UTC)

New XCF version

It appears that XCF files that cannot be thumbnailed such as File:Brewsteri_nurk.xcf is currently handled as a corrupt file and deleted. However, I would like to argue that these files are not actually corrupt and have a right to exist under the same idea that brought us Template:Source code please. Whether the MediaWiki software can render a thumbnail is irrelevant to the XCF file's main purpose, which is to make it possible for other people to continue some work without losing the author's intent. It should be perfectly acceptable for someone to upload a un-thumbnailable XCF file, as long as a corresponding PNG/GIF/JPG is also uploaded.

Conversion to 2.8 XCF is not always acceptable. For example, 2.10 XCF supports a linear blending mode, which 2.8 lacks. Significant visual differences exist between these two modes.

Every admin, who thinks, that the file is not corrupt, can undelete the file. Taivo (talk) 15:08, 29 June 2023 (UTC)
Honestly I don't care about that file in particular. But maybe we can have a template to say "don't panic at the thumbnail not rendering" or something. Artoria2e5 contribs 08:15, 13 July 2023 (UTC)
