First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines

Hello, and thank your for sharing your files with Commons. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. Please remember that all uploads require source, author and license information. Could you please resolve these problems, which are described on the page linked in above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which information may be missing. Thank you.

RE: "Uploading new version of audio" on COM:VP

[edit]

Did you figure out the problem you were having? Did anyone end up helping you? --ShakataGaNai Talk 08:02, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No, I did not figure out what was causing the issue. At that time, I uploaded a new file, appended "1" after the file name and used that in Wiktionary. But today, after reading your message, I checked the two files again and they seem to work. I have no idea why they are working now and when they started working. Thanks. --Panda10 00:14, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think I know what the problem was. If you account is new (less than 4 days old?) you can't upload new versions of files. I just learned this recently. But its good to hear that everything is ok now. Good luck. --ShakataGaNai Talk 00:26, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hungarian CategoryTOC

[edit]

Hello! I have created a Template:CategoryTOC-hu that indexes items in Hungarian categories according to the Hungarian alphabet. I've added it already to all the Hungarian pronunciation categories, but would appreciate your double-checking it for me. --EncycloPetey (talk) 19:02, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi EP, thanks for the TOC, looks good. Couple of questions:
  • What is the * in the beginning of the TOC?
  • There are two g's in the lower case TOC, one of them should be f.
  • What is ~ in the end of the TOC?
  • I think the digraphs will be sorted under the first letter of the digraph (cs will be sorted under c) - not sure what to do about this.
--Panda10 (talk) 21:27, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The * is a sorting character for the start of a category. The ~ is similarly used, but at the end of a list. Yes, the digraphs will sort by English rules, but the TOC will allow a user to jump directly to that part of the category, no matter how the items themselves are sorted. I'll fix the f/g. Cheers! --EncycloPetey (talk) 23:05, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Pronunciation Recording Gadget

[edit]
Visual workflow draft for pronunciation recording gadget; If you have trouble watching this video here, watch it on vimeo. A more extensive/explanative version is available.

Hey Panda10, as a contributor of pronunciation audio samples, please share your opinion on the creation of a gadget guiding through the whole process (recording, uploading and inclusion) and, provided that you’ll attend Wikimania, please feel invited showing your interest in a proposal for a presentation that will cover the gadget for 5-15 minutes (depending on the audience).

Questions? Do not hesitate asking me on my talk page. Thank you.
