File:TrueCrypt 6.1a Ubuntu.png

Why did you add this deletion request ? It is a screenshot of an open source software on an opensource OS.

Truecrypt is not open source. Please sign your messages with ~~~~ in the future. Palosirkka (talk) 08:50, 29 May 2013 (UTC)

File: Eaglepcb.png AND Eaglesch.png

why where these file deleted? they where screen shots taken by me of a free version of EAGLE CAD with an open source project open. kozlojak (talk)

Because eagle is proprietary. It may be free as in gratis but not free as in freedom. Sorry but that's what the law says. We cannot host proprietary software screenshots on Commons. Palosirkka (talk) 17:06, 30 May 2013 (UTC)

Doublecad

Ciao!! Sono una studentessa e ho partecipato alla stesura del manuale di Doublecad in italiano. Non sapevamo che vigessero queste regole per gli screenshot, così il mio Professore sta chiedendo l'autorizzazione alla Imsi per le immagini. Saluti.--Alelaterza (talk) 10:09, 31 May 2013 (UTC) Hi!! Hello! OK, next time you upload such screenshots you might want to use the Commons:OTRS system. Take care! Palosirkka (talk) 06:02, 5 June 2013 (UTC)

Could you help me?

Could you help me replacing Organograma_da_arquitetura_da_rede_I2P.jpeg with a better resolution one from here: http://www.oschina.net/project/tag/187/security-framework?lang=19&sort=view  ??

Hello there! Looks like there is a licensing issue with that image. You originally uploaded it claiming it's an image made by you, which apparently isn't the case but instead you got it from that Chinese web site? I think it's a borderline case whether it is simple enough to not get copyright, I'm not an expert. We would not have to decide that in case somebody has explicitly stated that it's released under a license accepted on Commons, is there a free license? A larger version is here [1]. Please sign your messages in the future with ~~~~, thank you. Palosirkka (talk) 08:44, 8 June 2013 (UTC)

jpg != png

Hi. So you know, the same image in jpg is not considered an exact duplicate if the file in png file format, well not in terms of enabling an admin to speedily delete either, see Commons:deletion policy. If you wish to progress a deletion, then it needs to go through a normal deletion process.  — billinghurst sDrewth 13:02, 12 June 2013 (UTC)

Deletions and duplicates for Department of Defense uploads

Hi, thanks for taking time to review some of these uploads. Two points have come up with your recent tagging though:

  1. You have created a few deletion requests which have not completed correctly. The DR discussion pages have not been created and I have not been notified as the uploader. This might be caused by the script you are using timing out. Example: File:U.S. Navy Engineman Fireman Olusanya Oyeyemi reads a passage from the Bible during a Catholic service aboard the guided missile frigate USS Simpson (FFG 56) off the coast of Dakar, Senegal, March 10, 2012 120310-N-ON468-003.jpg.
  2. When you mark a duplicate where the same image has different VIRINs (which according to the DoD are supposed to be unique), as you did with File:U.S. Navy Seaman Apprentice Cody Jelinek removes rust from a mooring aboard the guided missile frigate USS Simpson (FFG 56) in the Sierra Leone Basin March 11, 2012 120311-N-ON468-007.jpg, could you please add the additional VIRIN to the description of the file that will remain? This will avoid problems with the same image being uploaded again. Unfortunately as the VIRIN is in the EXIF data for the file, the automatic hash check that Commons does for uploads cannot identify these as duplicates as this includes the EXIF data, so checking whether the VIRIN exists or not in a file description is as good as we can do for the moment (which is how I avoid this problem for new uploads). In this example I have gone ahead and noted it in the information box.

By the way, if you would like to help with a backlog of known duplicates that need checking this way, it would be great if you could spend some time looking at the analysis I ran at User:Faebot/SandboxL. This includes links to handy searches for the VIRINs which may speed up the decision making process of which to keep. Thanks -- (talk) 12:07, 5 July 2013 (UTC)

Hello. Regarding 1. I only added the delete template by hand (I don't do JavaScript) and don't really know how to do a proper deletion request, seems like a huge hassle. I hope and believe that my deletion actions are still rather useful than negative. 2. I'll try to remember to do that. And I might take a look at that list of yours if I have time in the future. Thanks for the comments. Palosirkka (talk) 14:31, 5 July 2013 (UTC)
Hi, you should be able to see a link in the left hand Toolbox to Nominate for deletion. You then just have to fill in the nomination text and the tool takes care of the rest. You can find an explanation at Help:Nominate for deletion. -- (talk) 15:05, 5 July 2013 (UTC)

gnux user images

Hello,

I am a french teacher that organizes the work for this student team (gnux), they have to write and present an excel lesson on wikiversity to other students tomorrow (November 28th). It's very difficult to write a lesson without images of type screen shots. When i have given them the job, I was not aware of the "software screen shot interdictions" on Wikicommons, so the mistake is coming from me, it will never happen again later. We have already found another solution for new images (external links), which can be efficient. But for the old images and links written on their lessons in last 14 days, can you, please, delay the suppression of images to friday, November 29th, just the necessary delay to be quiet during their presentation ?

Thanks a lot.

See you soon.

Mamagalubru

Hi there! I'm afraid I cannot help you as the images are already deleted and I'm not an admin and cannot undelete the images. Besides that, the images were infringing copyright and thus the policy of Commons so I'm not sure anybody would undelete them. I won't however tag any more images until friday. I guess your students learned a valuable lesson about copyright in this process. I would also like to take this chance to point you to a free office program you could make screenshots of and post those on Commons, LibreOffice. Palosirkka (talk) 20:05, 27 November 2013 (UTC)

Category discussion warning

Category:Helsinki_pride has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Maps

I don't understand you. Maps are created by myself using, as usual here, openstreetmap, that's released with proper licence: what is the problem? In it.wiki we all use do it....--Ale Sasso (talk) 23:10, 8 January 2014 (UTC)

Please, I see that u are proposed for deleting all my maps... why? What is the correct tag that I have to use in your opinion? --Ale Sasso (talk) 23:15, 8 January 2014 (UTC)
Ok. I tried to correct and now I hope the string is correct. Isn't it? I'm not sure to have fixed all files: please, can you check? Thanks.--Ale Sasso (talk) 23:40, 8 January 2014 (UTC)
Ok... I found your history-log and consequently fixed all maps. Please, next time propose to delete pictures after a discussion and not before ;) Thanks and good night (here is 01.05...)--Ale Sasso (talk) 00:02, 9 January 2014 (UTC)
Ooook. Now also the file you're shown me is fixed. Your statement is correct (imho)... Anyway, I copied another credits formula which is surely correct (yesss, more than a simple "own") and yet used in Commons. Please, remember: we are use to mark for deletion a file (and, even more so, several files) only before a proper discussion with the author, according with netiquette and wikimedia politeness. Last night I had quickly to change all tags, without any help, going to bed very late and bothering a 6-mounths babe. Note that is not useful for me understand you also 'couse I'm italian/genoese speacking... Next time be a little more enduring, please. ;) Thank you and greetings!--Ale Sasso (talk) 11:07, 10 January 2014 (UTC)

This file may be deleted.
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Tamil Language Flag 2.svg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.

Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

Pay attention to copyright
File:Sports icon.png has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added may soon be deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please replace the copyvio tag with {{subst:OP}} and have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you disagree that the file is a copyright violation for any other reason, please replace the copyvio tag with a regular deletion request.

copy right violations for the web science mooc

Hey Palosirkka, you have marked several of our web science videos as possible copy right violations. you can find the statements on User_talk:Rob-nowman. as stated on User_talk:Yann#undo_deletion_request:_File:Eclipse_Installation.webm we have been creating almost all our content ourselves. I would like to understand the problem with those files. I fought hard with the administration of the university to be able to publish our material under CC-BY-SA in order to go for wikicommons and wikiversity and be able to donate the material as open educational resources. best regards --Renepick (talk) 20:51, 21 July 2014 (UTC)

These videos incorporate elements of proprietary/copyrighted software (e.g. Microsoft Word) which in turn makes these videos derivatives of non-free content, which is strictly forbidden and strictly enforced on Commons. If the non-free software buttons/graphics/text is cropped out, these videos can be re-uploaded -FASTILY 09:17, 24 July 2014 (UTC)

Oh, sorry, but you don't have informations about language on your Main Page... Then in english, yesterday, was my upload File:ITunes_12_Screen.png tagged as an image, which can violate the rules... It's a ScreenShot of freeware application by Apple inc., so I thought, that shouldn't be a problem with uploading this file. On the Czech Forum of Wikipedia Commons told me that this is a problem, so I started to deal with the problem differently. Apple inc. has a PR page on which you can find the official photos. https://www.apple.com/pr/products/itunes/itunes.html Just help me, which license should I use for these images? Thank you, and sorry for my english, --MMMHHH (talk) 07:30, 4 November 2014 (UTC)
No worries. I guess the Czech forum already told you this but by default the copyright law says you can't do anything with the file. Freeware is just gratis but gives you no other permission than to use the said software, no screenshots for example. So unless the copyright holder explicitly gives you permission, a license, to do so. So you'll have to find a license somewhere and if you find one that is compatible with Commons, then you can upload it. Refer to COM:L. I think your English is pretty good btw.
