Please give images better names
[edit]
I noticed you've uploaded Image:556165 5691fcfdcb detail.jpg and I thought I should turn your attention to a common error.
Please give uploaded images meaningful names. Otherwise they are difficult to track and it is hard to tell what the image is about without actually looking at it. I suggest you rename your image with an intuitive name that describes the image itself. Thanks, and happy editing! MECU≈talk 14:32, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

Strawberry Thief
[edit]I am interested in using this image, credited to PKM

Thanks for uploading Image:3-piantagione Taccuino Sanitatis Casanatense 4182 shirt..jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use GFDL to release it under the multilicense GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. —Angr 17:55, 15 January 2008 (UTC)

- I'm Bazzargh over on Wikipedia btw. The caption of this image shows that the date cannot be correct - Lady Abdy was born in 1907 and is clearly not 12 in the picture. Also, Lucienne only started working at Reboux in 1920, so couldn't have made this hat one year earlier. Pollards other work dates from the late 1920s, making it likely that this is a copyvio (from after 1923)
- I'll buy that; not an expert in this period and only following my sources. Delete away! - PKM 18:13, 26 January 2008 (UTC)

Hi. If you have a look at Commons:Deletion requests/Image:Edward VI Scrots c1550.jpg you'll see there is some ongoing discussion about the copyright status of your scanned Scrots image. In fact, I see that you have already contributed. One issue of importance is the physical location of the actual painting from which the original photograph was made. Would you be able to check the book, please, and see what it says? Does it list the name of the museum or owner of the painting? Is there any copyright notice associated with it - for example in an appendix? I hope you can help. --MichaelMaggs (talk) 19:39, 13 June 2008 (UTC)
Joseph Wright (of Derby)
[edit]Oh yes ... same person. I think one group comes from his naming on en:wikipedia and the otrher because of why not just "Joseph Wright". In his lifetime, I believe, he was known as both. I find Commons a bit thin on guidance for style so its tricky to decide the best choice for resolving the two cats. Any ideas Victuallers (talk) 08:38, 16 June 2008 (UTC)

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Created derivative work of File:Yarn_twist.png
[edit]Hi there PKM... While using Image:Yarn_twist.png in the en:rope article I found it possibly confusing to readers that the Z/right-twist yarn was on the left side of the image, and vice versa. I created a derivative version at File:Yarn_twist_S-Left_Z-Right.png which swaps their positions (as well as removing the border, since the wiki software takes care of that). Since the original is used on many other wikis, and I didn't want to break any captions/descriptions in those languages, I decided not to upload over the original file.
I am planning on substituting the new image on EN pages and fixing any text referring the old positions. Can you think of any reasons not to do this that might not have occurred to me? Thanks. --Dfred (talk) 01:52, 11 June 2009 (UTC)
Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 22:22, 7 September 2009 (UTC)

Do you have ready access to the book from which you scanned this? I'm curious about its origins because one of the banners is "wrong": the saltire appears to belong to Cecily Neville (no one else fits) but it ought to be on red, not blue. —Tamfang (talk) 23:34, 9 October 2010 (UTC)
