Hello.

Can you make the same updates you made in File:Syrian, Iraqi, and Lebanese insurgencies.png, in the supplementary maps File:Syrian Civil War map.svg (with the same stages like in the aforementioned regional map, because this map has not been updated since 26 March) and File:Iraq war map.png (because the Sinjar Resistance Units and PKK don't rule any territory in Iraq, and remove this description in the English text which has been forgotten) as well?

Turkish advances in Northern Iraq

What are your sources for the Turkish advances against Iraqi Kurdistan around Soran that you added in the last revision? --AntiodonoghuE23 (talk) 14:35, 14 May 2018 (UTC)

Hi, The TAF has been in the area, fighting against the PKK since March https://www.iraqinews.com/iraq-war/turkish-troops-penetrate-deep-northern-iraq-clash-pkk-fighters/ However, it was always a guerilla conflict, so mapping it was always hard. Last week there were some fighting around Soran (here is a video https://twitter.com/RudawEnglish/status/994523354601349120) (and here is a map https://twitter.com/iraqiinfo_eng/status/994312728788525056). I thought I would add Turkish colours for places where their presence was confirmed (like the area north of Soran, as well as a few pockets north of there). No, not yet. In fact ISIS has gained ground against the Kurds recently. It's because the SDF is focusing on bolstering their defenses on the northern border with Turkey. Nate Hooper (talk) 15:43, 19 November 2018 (UTC)

Hey Kelsey, that might actually be a good idea and I do agree (when I uploaded it, I asked if people thought it looked too cluttered, but I didn't get much feedback at the time). So thanks for your feedback! The map was originally made by me and an American guy. He still has his map without the DMZ, I'll just copy and paste his Idlib area onto this map later tonight. Haha, don't worry about Vermont, I like questions. I'd say that their pocket on the Euphrates might last an entire month or two (they still have a few thousand fighters, and they are fanatical), but I might be wildly wrong on that. As for their existence as a gorilla force or a terror group, I don't think it will disappear in our lifetime. Of course history moves in unexpected directions but the effort of "reformers" to fight against Islamic extremism, I would argue is folly. Given that their interpretation of the Quran varies from plausible, to outright correct and that somewhere in the area of 15% of Muslims support them or groups like them, I think they will be around for a very long time, unfortunately. Personally, I believe that ISIL's physical Caliphate will be completely destroyed within a month or two (from the time of this writing). They only have about 2,000–2,500 fighters left in their Baghuz al-Fawqani enclave (my own estimates, based on ground reports), and they are vastly outmanned and outgunned and trapped in a 1/2 square kilometer piece of land. Aside from this small pocket, ISIL possibly has a larger desert pocket straddling between eastern Homs and western Deir ez-Zor (where ISIL leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi could be hiding), but when these areas fall, ISIL is pretty much finished as a military power in the Middle East. However, the insurgency and terrorist network overall will probably continue to last for years, if not decades, until ISIL's ideology finally loses its appeal. By the way, Nate Hooper, please be aware that the person who asked you this question (and other similar accounts earlier) are all sockpuppets of User:Angela Criss, who has been Globally Locked and de facto Globally Banned for his persistent cross-wiki vandalism and trolling. Their future socks may make some positive contributions to this site, but I would strongly advise you to closely scrutinize their edits. In any case, if you see this person again, please report them to m:SRG for Global Locking; in the meantime, you can report their socks here to a local admin, like User:Magog the Ogre for blocking. Thanks man. The main reason I didn't edit the map for a long time was because there was little happening (apart from the Hama offensive, I was away then). Yes, I mainly just want the Kurds to reconcile with the Syrian government. Turks taking some land wouldn't be the worst thing because it will allow them to resettle refugees who might otherwise end up in Europe. That's just my personal opinion though. To edit it, simply open the gif, and right click it, then select "save image as" now you have the gif file. Don't worry about that for now, you'll use that file a little later. Next go back to the gif, right click and select "copy image" when it's on the last frame (timing is needed haha). Then copy that onto paint (at least that's what I do). You could probably use photoshop or something but ms paint is all you really need. Then edit the next frame so it matches the most recent day and save it. The date up the top left is Arial font, size 26. Also, there's a tiny little selection of the colours up there which I sometimes use. Anyway, I'm sure you can figure it out. Save it. Now you should have a gif with each day except the most recent and a picture file of the most recent day which you just edited. Then simply go to this website: [[1]]. Click "upload images" and select the gif, then click "upload images" again and select your picture. Then scroll down and click "create gif animation" and it should have your latest day added. @AlAboud83: I wish you the best. If you have any other questions, let me know. Originally I used livemaps, southfront, Syrian war map and I got specific updates from friends on forums online (they wouldn't just say things, but they'd post reliable sources) and we'd discuss the most likely frontlines. After I uploaded my gif and map, this Wiki Jannie tried to get them taken down because I'm using more than one source. You know what these wikipedia people are like? Anyway, we had a massive argument. To cut a long story short, I am now only allowed to use one source (the rule was designed for situations where people use multiple sources that disagree, but I'm not allowed to use more than one even if they agree, doesn't make sense, but I had to do it to get this guy off my back). For "legal reasons" I must say that I'm mainly just using livemaps as a result. Nate Hooper (talk) 02:07, 29 October 2019 (UTC)

Bleached colours

Unfortunately, I'm currently banned, but I'm appealing to the Wiki mods / Gods (see my wikipedia talk page). Knowing how this website works, I'll probably lose the appeal. Yeah, it's very stop and start. Every few months they hype themselves up and announce big things, but Turkey always starts shrieking and uses their diplomatic influence on Russia to make the SAA to stop after only having made small gains. Very sad. On the other side, a big Idlib push would mean more refugees in Turkey and then Europe, so it may be a good thing if you look at it from that perspective. @TheHatingNerdino666: Nate Hooper (talk) 07:27, 24 January 2020 (UTC)

In response to the anons who want updates, I must tell you that I'm working on it. But in the meantime, to hold you all over, I made a gif. And by "I," I mean my friend named "Ebin." I complied the images, but most of the work was done by him. @206.53.88.85: oh right, the suspected sock of Kelsey? Yes, he may be. I checked the edit and it looks accurate, so I think we should give him the benefit of the doubt. Also, what are the rules on socking? Do we remove all their edits (which are good and useful) or just those where they back themselves up in arguments? I honestly don't know, but anyway I think we should be grateful to theHatingNerdo in this specific case, it's a good edit which was needed. I appreciate your concern though. EDIT: Oh, alright, I just saw the Manbij area, well, that looks a little suspicious. He should show sources for why he thinks it's completely controlled by the SAA. I'll discuss this with him. @206.53.88.85: To be fair, there are some sources which do give the whole Manbij area to the SAA, but from what I've seen (and I might be wrong), the more reliable ones give it as joint-controlled. I just asked some people who know A LOT about this and they said that I should go with the sources which say it's joint-controlled, like we had before. Random question

Why do you update your Idlib GIF map, but not the Syrian, Iraqi, and Lebanese insurgencies map? --Mucusslide544 Backup (talk) 04:24, 13 February 2020 (UTC)

@Mucusslide544: Well, in the past I did them at the same time. However, now that I'm using different maps, it's no longer a simple matter of copying the new day of the area of interest onto the big map. The reasons for why the two maps are out of sync is a long one (and I'm not really sure why or how certain changes were made) but to make a long story short, the scale of the gif map is about 5% greater than the Syria / Iraq map. To edit one doesn't really make editing the other one take any less time (well, I suppose the research part would have already been done, so I'd save time on that - but everything else like line drawing and pasting new towns is done from scratch). So the answer is in the effort it takes. I might get around to editing the map this weekend. Although we need not rely solely on me. How about you give it a go?
