Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy. More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing. |

Tip: Categorizing images[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 11:05, 14 August 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:@Victor Nicolas 1957.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Wikimedia Commons does not accept derivative works of non-free works such as File:@COTE EST 1957.png. It only accepts free content, which is images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Reproductions of copyrighted works are also subject to the same copyright, and therefore this file must unfortunately be considered non-free. For more information, please read Commons:Derivative works and Commons:Freedom of panorama. You can ask questions about Commons policies in Commons:Help desk.

all your images are missing EXIF data[edit]
How comes that none of your landscape photos, even those from 2010 such as File:EGLISE MONTMEYAN.png, File:6. Montmeyan côté nord janvier2010.png, File:@@@MONTMEYAN PLAGE 2010.png and File:PRESBYTERE.png, has any EXIF data? Taken from some website? --Túrelio (talk) 14:36, 23 November 2010 (UTC)
THESE PHOTOS ARE PART OF MY OWN WORK. I AM LIVING IN THE VILLAGE OF MONTMEYAN, SO THAT IT IS EASY. IT IS NO EXIF DATA BECAUSE I USE PHOTOSHOP TO RESIZE MY PICTURES, THEN TO CREATE PNG FORMAT. MANY THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT INDEED. MARC NICOLAS.
- Hmm, "ARE PART OF MY OWN WORK" sounds rather ambigious and may well be applicable to photos of someone else. Plain and clear, please: did you shoot the original photographies? --Túrelio (talk) 09:13, 24 November 2010 (UTC)
And what about File:Beppo (sculpteur).png? There were repeated claims of an IP that "Don't use without author permission (Raphaël SCHOTT)" and that is actually nc/nd-licensed.[1] --Túrelio (talk) 09:16, 24 November 2010 (UTC)
Yes, I have taken the original photographies. Again : I am living in the village of Montmeyan all year long. But I need your help because I am quite new in the Wikimedia world: - I love my village of Montmeyan so that I have done my best to improve its page, - The sculptor Victor Nicolas is my grand-father and I have created its page in the respect of his memory (old pictures of him are part of my private and familial collection), - The sculptor Beppo has been student of my grand-father, therefore I have very close relation with him. I have created the page of Beppo in order to show its work started 40 years ago. Beppo himself wished to use a recent picture of him, taken recently by his friend Raphael Schott : Raphael has allowed the use of the picture for this purpose. I have a high respect for wikimedia and fully understand that everything must be proved and allowed. For that reason, all your advices and support will be very welcome.
- Then, let's start with File:Beppo (sculpteur).png. Due to the above mentioned IP edits and to your own statement, the photographer is Raphaël SCHOTT, not you. Therefore, you need his written permission. And this permission has not only to be valid for the "page of Beppo created by you", but for everybody and for every kind of purpose, including commercial use and including the right to produce derivatives (changing) of the original image (except what may be prohibited due to personality rights of the depicted). That is far more than "use for a wikipedia page", but that is our policy. For the permission you should use our templates, which are also available in French. Go to Commons:Messages type, copy the boxed "Déclaration de consentement", enter the filename and the license to which Raphaël SCHOTT agrees (I would recommend Template:Cc-by-sa-3.0 or Template:Cc-by-sa-2.0-fr), mail it to Raphaël SCHOTT and ask him to read it and to put his legal name and the date under the text and to mail it back to permissions-commons-fr@wikimedia.org. After you have done that, you should add OTRS pending to the image page. --Túrelio (talk) 09:55, 24 November 2010 (UTC)
Well... We understand, Beppo and I, your concern about that picture taken by Raphael. We will discuss the matter with the photographer, then we will take the appropriate decision. For the time being, in order to avoid any kind of difficulties, the file has been removed from Beppo's page. Once again, thank you very much for your support.
I've seen that an OTRS-ticket has been added to File:@Victor Nicolas 1957.jpg. That's great. However, you should correct the author-entry. --Túrelio (talk) 16:53, 25 November 2010 (UTC)

Copyright status: File:Maurice Janetti.jpg
This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Maurice Janetti.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. File:Anna Karina, posters in Paris Metro, Fébruary 2020.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |

Thanks for uploading File:Logo Guagno.png.
Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |
