Regarding recent Pennsylvania Game Commission poster uploads[edit]

Hello Loveleyla, and thank you for contributing to Commons! I see that you've recently uploaded images of old Pennsylvania Game Commission posters such as File:Prevent forest fire.jpg. That's great!

You've marked these images as created by the federal government of the United States. Works made by the federal government are indeed in the public domain, however the footers on these images suggest that they were made by the Pennsylvania Game Commission. Since these images are not made by the federal government, but by a state agency, this copyright exemption doesn't apply, and thus standard copyright law applies. The source of this image doesn't specify it's copyright status.

This image was published between 1935 and 1943 (accordinf to the source) and with a copyright notice (name of the author), so Template:PD-US-no_notice doesn't apply. However, Template:PD-US-not renewed might, if the Pennsylvania Game Association did not renew the work's copyright status. A search on the US copyright office's online catlog shows that the P.G.C. did not register anything from 1978 onwards, which suggests me that works before that date were also likely not registered.

I suggest you instead use Template:PD-US-not renewed from now on for similar works. Also update your recent similar uploads to instead use this copyright template. Have this in mind when making future uploads to Wikimedia Commons. You can check out more info about copyright below:

Please don't hesitate to reply or contact if you need any help in Commons. Happy uploading!

Hello Aimarekin,
Thank you for going through all that trouble with licensing! I appreciate your advice. However, when I try to go back into the uploads, I am unsure how to edit the licensing. Do you have any tips? Are you able to go into the upload to edit the licensing to show me what you did so I can do it on the others?

Editing articles can be confusing - If you would like to edit an upload's license, head to the upload's site, look for the "Licensing" header and click "edit source". There, you will be able to see what's under the license header.
You'll want to remove the previous template and replace it. Templates are small pieces of text that are replaced with automatic, larger blocks of code. They use the format {{ExampleName}}. License templates follow the format {{PD-COUNTRY-DETAILS}}. So, in the example linked, you'd want to remove {{PD-USGov}} and replace it with {{PD-US-not renewed}}.
I've edited File:Protect field-forest.jpg as an example. You can click "edit source" in the "Licensing" header to check the new code - it's not very complicated, it's just an overwrite.
Thank you for your interest! Please do ask if you have any other questions.
