Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Bilder überschreiben - trennen

Hallo Kantonsbibliothek AR, ich habe bei Bildern, die du hier hochgeladen hast, gesehen, dass du jeweils ein Foto mit einem anderen, neueren überschrieben hast. Da es nicht zwei Varianten des gleichen Bildes sind, sondern Fotos aus unterschiedlichen Jahren, möchte ich gerne beide Varianten zur Verfügung haben. Darum habe ich bei den betreffenden Dateien den Antrag auf «splitten» gestellt. Nun wird es jeweils nötig bei den beiden "neu" entstandenen Dateien die korrekten Beschreibungen, Jahrzahl, Urheber/Fotograph, Kategorien usw. anzubringen. Es betrifft folgende Dateien:

• File:Kirche Trogen Innenansicht.jpg
• File:Landsgemeindeplatz und Kirche in Trogen.jpg
• File:Schopfacker.tif
• File:Kantonsbibliothek Lesesaal Fuenfeck.jpg

Hallo Kantonsbibliothek AR, ich habe gesehen, dass du bereits Änderungen an den oben genannten Dateien vorgenommen hast bevor sie getrennt wurden. Nun dauert es hier manchmal etwas länger als geplant - jetzt wurde die erste der oben genannten Dateien getrennt; es ist jene der Kantonsbibliothek > es wurde aufgeteil in File:Kantonsbibliothek Lesesaal Fuenfeck.jpg und in File:Kantonsbibliothek Lesesaal Fuenfeck 2008.jpg. Könntest Du nachschauen, ob die Beschreibungen für die jeweilige Datei korrekt sind? Danke! Danke für die Blumen ;-) Wie ihr auf meiner Benutzerseite sehen könnt, bin ich kein Wikipedia-«Profi» (wie übrigens viele, die hier mitwirken). Mich interessieren aber Themen rund um die Ostschweiz – aktuelle und historische – und darum bin ich auf diese von euch hochgeladenen Bilder gestossen (die unterdessen jetzt alle getrennt wurden > siehe Abschnitt unten). You overwrote the content of File:Landsgemeindeplatz und Kirche in Trogen.jpg. At the request of Schofför I've performed a history split on that file. The newer content is now at File:Landsgemeindeplatz und Kirche in Trogen 2.jpg while the older content remains at File:Landsgemeindeplatz und Kirche in Trogen.jpg. Because you uploaded both versions, I'd appreciate it if you could check, and update if necessary, the summary and categories of the two files to match the depicted content. —RP88 (talk) 15:09, 28 November 2015 (UTC)

You may need to update the licenses on one or more of these files as well. If you believe any of these files are not public domain or otherwise freely licensed, let me know and I'll see about deleting them.
