Pont des Arts panorama[edit]

Hey, Benh Lieu Song!

Could you reveal how did you make that panorama of a part of Paris as seen from pont du Carrousel? What camera and lens did you use, was it stitched together from multiple images, what kind of settings resulted in such an image and what piece of software did yu process it in?

  • it's only an (3) exposures blended panorama. Soft I used : Canon's DPP, Hugin and Gimp. I did not put camera details (not really relevant these days) but since I'm here : Canon 400D + 70-200 f/2.8 IS L. Colours are mostly natural (I probably slightly enhanced the saturation, and of course, the exposure yields brighter image than what one would normally see). I also worked on the different exposures raw pic to make sure people overlap as perfectly as possible. - Benh (talk) 22:00, 7 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Just a note to say...[edit]

...how impressed I am with your work - thanks (from all, I'm sure) for your contributions! I too am a photographer living in Paris - is photography your trade? While I'm here, what's up with the SNTE copyright claims on all photos of the Eiffel Tower at night - I had published a photo a few years back, but it got pulled because of 'copyright fear'. Yet I'm not so sure that that copyright applies to (US-based) Wikipedia - would you know anything about that? Anyhow, cheers, thanks and take care. ThePromenader (talk) 12:22, 4 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Sorry for long answer. Thanks for the positive feedback. I'm not lawyer and all, but from what I remember, if the photo is hosted in Commons (different stories if it's hosted in en Wikipedia maybe), we use the "common denominator" laws (most restrictive) from all countries in this planet. So if subject of a photo is a recent french architecture, FoP applies. That is why they once removed all potential (I insist on that last term) copvio material. However, it seems the SNTE copyright claims isn't anymore considered very valid, so the trend seems to be toward keeping these pictures now. Please ask village pump, someone will probably provid you more extensive details. I remember user:Jastrow had good insight on that as well. - Benh (talk) 19:52, 16 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I was sure you'd been involved with that (cough) law at one point or another (hard to avoid it with all the city pictures you've taken - thanks for the tip! I'll drop Jastrow a message tomorrow. I never liked that law (why the h*ll do they go through all that trouble to make the 'Iron Lady' that sells this town look pretty, but then don't want anyone to take her picture? We're basically free advertising for them), and am glad to see that it's... losing weight. I'm also tired of the copyright paranoia that seems to reign here, but that's another story - but is Wikipedia really too poor to ask a lawyer about copyright claims and settle the fuss for once and for all? Sorry for the rant... but I've about had it with the SNTE's greedy 'legal fear'-mongering. I even contacted them to tell them that I wanted to give an image of the tower ~for free~ to wikipedia, and even offered to give ~them~ credit in the photo - all I got was an 'It's not in our policy' answer.
But hey, thanks again ; ) ThePromenader (talk) 20:23, 16 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
PS: The jpeg quality isn't great, but here is the photo in question. Cheers ; ) ThePromenader (talk) 21:10, 16 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The picture is wonderful ! U should upload to commons and pray for it to be kept ;). Yes there's a bit of paranoia over here. Although I can understand that, IMO, Wikimedia should have lawyers (maybe it's the case already?) and be not afraid of such "treats" to encourage people uploading even more pictures (the borderline cases ones). Again, u should try uploading your picture. It's so nice it's worth a try. It will be FP material for sure ! - Benh (talk) 09:24, 17 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, sorry I missed your reply (I wasn't notified?). Thanks, glad you like it! I can try to upload it, but I'm less than certain that it will 'stick' - the Eiffel Tower copyright issue is quite a well known one, and there's quite a few 'deleters' out there even looking for similar submissions… I could be sneaky and name the image something else than 'Eiffel Tower', but that would be… hm.
Just in case you're interested: I took that picture back in ~2006 before HDR became a craze, but one could consider it HDR all the same: There's about seven different image versions in there, all taken for the aspect/effect I wanted to capture: One for the Tower's basic lighting, one for the searchlight, one for the 'blinkyblinky' lights, one for the city streetlights, one for the traffic (extremely long exposition), and one for the 'general ambiance' background and one for the sky… then I just 'dodged and burned' the whole together (although I use digital now, I still have a rather old school way of thinking ; ). ThePromenader (talk) 12:46, 24 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
PS: It's back - let's see how it goes… Cheers! ThePromenader (talk) 21:40, 24 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi I tried to find an email adress for you, but wern't able. I just wanted to let you know that I used one of your great images on this page: http://parisferie.no/ I might want to use more of your images, but I'm wasn't sure what page you wanted me to link to. Send me a mail if you are interested: ferie (at) ferieiprovence.no

Hi, actually I don't care much. I'm glad my pictures are used. You only have to credit my as author, but I consider this mostly a courtesy. You won't get lawyers knocking at ur door if you don't. - Benh (talk) 19:52, 16 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Encore merci ! Renaud --Frélampier (talk) 08:55, 12 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
