Flickr2Commons

I have just come across a few images you have recently uploaded from Flickr. I would appreciate it if in the future, you used the Flickr2Commons tool. This tool allows images to be moved to Commons from Flickr without having to download the images to your own computer. It also brings in the largest resolution of the image, as well making sure to list the correct license and url, making it easy for the automated Flickr Review system. Also, it is fairly easy to categorize images with this tool. • Hi! I prefer UploadWizard extension. It also allows to upload original-resolution files directly from Flickr (only for autopatrollers - up to 500 files) and blocks duplicate uploads (while F2C not always). Hi Юрий Д.К., a request: would you, where applicable, please be so kind to add the {{Watermark}} tag to the David Zhang images you upload? Categorization

Please remember to use the most specific categories possible when uploading images, and do not dump large numbers of files in broad categories like Category:California. Doing so creates cleanup work for other editors. Thanks, Pi.1415926535 (talk) 01:26, 9 July 2023 (UTC)

Renaming Flickr-imported files

Hey, when renaming files imported from Flickr, please keep the redirect, as it will help not to create duplicates. Flickr2Commons only identifies files with the exact same name, so if the redirect is deleted someone may cluelessly upload a file that is already on Commons. • I've noticed that F2C doesn't detect duplicates when I try to download an album (detect only if file with exact name exist on Commons) but successfully detect them when I want to download an entire user's photoset or single image from Flickr (even if Commons file has another name). I think that we really need to enable duplicate detection in case of an album downloading. I've opened the theme on Commons talk:Flickr2Commons but still no response. Flickr2Commons misuse

Despite warnings, you continue to misuse Flickr2Commons by uploading poor-quality images and files with poor titles, descriptions, and categorization. A sample from the last few days:

• File:Huntington Avenue in Sonw (15893346354).jpg: Misspelled title and description, no categories
• File:Lost (23713372054).jpg: Uselessly blurry; no useful title or description; lacking useful categories
• File:Herd on the march (20677798439).jpg: no useful title, description; lacking useful categories
• File:No unlesses (23503392795).jpg: nonsense title and description, no useful categories, and out of scope
• File:Why (26818683114).jpg: You added a single, overly broad category that does not actually identify what is in the image. You left a nonsense filename and useless description in place.

This is your final warning that you need to add useful filenames, descriptions, and categories to every single image you upload. (The filename and description on flickr are almost never useful - just leaving them is not acceptable.) Yes, but Flickr is user generated content. You cannot trust. We only trust in user generated content if originated from Wikipedians :-) Maybe you could try to contact Thomas Hirsch via Flickr and clarify this with him. If you cannot clarify the location in Vienna, maybe it is better to remove this cat and assign categories on what is to be seen on the image, like poppy fields (not poppy fields in Austria, again too specific) or whatever the poles in the pond are correctly called. Regarding Category:Vienna: Vienna is a beautiful place worth visiting. Even if you only do it based on google street view or one of the numerous images well categorized and assigned to Vienna already. It is a pain to cleanup such categories like Category:Vienna full of poorly described and categorized images, a pain I would like to share with you. --Herzi Pinki (talk) 13:59, 31 August 2023 (UTC)

Birds of Scotland - subcategories

Hi Юрий Д.К. - please avoid making lots of minute subcategories Category:[Species] in Scotland, unless the species already has huge numbers of files (e.g. Cygnus olor); it is better instead to create Category:[Genus] in Scotland or Category:[Family] in Scotland, and keep the files in their relevant Category:[Species], so that {Geogroup} mapping for the species category shows the entire natural range of the species, rather than the [range - Scotland]. • @MPF: Hi! Removing files from specific categories like "Pastor roseus in Scotland" and deleting categories with reason "Excessive subdivision of small parent category" (I don't remember such speedy deletion criteria) is not acceptable. See Modularity principle "file should be put in the most specific category". Also, I have no doubt that sooner or later we will still create categories like "Pastor roseus in Scotland" and later we will create "Pastor roseus in Glasgow", "Pastor roseus in Dumfries and Galloway" etc. due to large number of files. Eventually, yes, in about a century, when there are enough suitable files! At the moment, it just makes files very difficult to find if you have to go through dozens of subcategories to reach them. The whole point of categorisation is to make finding files easy, not to make it difficult. When a category reaches 200 files, then is the time to think about suitable subcategories. Remember too, birds are natural objects; human political boundaries mean nothing to them. So when considering new subcategories within a species, look for plumage features, or similar, rather than dividing by artificial human boundaries. MPF (talk) 20:49, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

  @Трифонов Андрей: Я исправил файлы, до которых Вы не добрались. Уже давно для всех своих загрузок, тем более для моих работ ставлю точные категории, насколько я могу это сделать. Эта партия крымских фото одна из последних с такими широкими категориями. Сейчас проверяю свои старые загрузки, чтобы добавить точные категории, имена файлов и описания (в основном анонимно). Иногда участники Фликр удаляют свои фото, поэтому раньше приходилось иногда загружать больше фото, но в ущерб категоризации. P.S. Моих работ в категории Крым нет, только загрузки. С уважением. EC images

Hello, thank you for helping clear the backlog for Category:EC-Audiovisual Center review needed. The process needs a slight adjustment though.

The {{EC-Audiovisual Center}} template itself is a license template, so the reviewed information should go in that template and not in a newly added {{LicenseReview}} tag. For example, from this edit we now have two license tags on the file; one unreviewed and the other reviewed. And unfortunately even though you reviewed a bunch of EC-Audiovisual files, the files still show in the Category:EC-Audiovisual Center review needed category.

Duplicates

I just noticed that all the files in the series of File:Trip to Australia 2009 you uploaded in July 2023 are actually lower resolution duplicates of the same files Fæ already uploaded in 2016. See File:Trip to Australia 2009 56.jpg and File:In Kakadu Natl Park E of Darwin N.T - a roadside forest fire reddens the imminent sunset (13113319793).jpg as an example. I tagged a few but I'm not going to do all for you. As per COM:Dupe, the duplicates should be deleted. I leave it up to you as the uploader to sort this out. • @Calistemon: It seems that Flickr author uploaded these files to Flickr, later deleted (by the time they have been uploaded to Commons). After deletion, he edited the files and re-uploaded them. So it is almost impossible to detect duplicates by time of the upload (July 2023) because they are only visually duplicates, not technically. I noticed that the image sizes are vastly different and wondered what the reason for that was. By the looks of Category:Photographs by Murray Foubister, there is a vast number of images from this Flickr author but, I think, there is only about 50 or so in the Trip to Australia 2009 group. IP masking scandal

Let's kill this canard that it is legally impossible to edit using IP addresses stone dead. It is claimed that there is "risk to users whose information is published in this way." That's like claiming that it is legally impossible for a stuntman to perform a stunt because of the risk to him personally. But he assumes the risk - to prevent him earning his living in a way he enjoys is to breach his human rights. You might as well ban boxing, cricket, football, golf, horseracing, motor racing and rugby, all of which have seen fatalities. This is why, if this ill-informed scheme ever comes to fruition, it will be challenged in the European Court on day one. It's cleverly constructed to breach consumers' human rights - there will be a little notice saying a temporary account will be created. It does not say that it will link together all the IP addresses used by the editor over the next year, which will typically run into the hundreds. Just look at the information provided when you click "account details" on your email account. That information is accessible only to you, but you have no control over who is getting the information stored in the cookie - Wikimedia couldn't tell you anyway, because they don't know! The Court has ruled the user must be given the opportunity to make "a clear and informed choice" about whether she wants a cookie or not - i.e. "yes" or "no". A dialogue box must be presented explaining EXACTLY what this cookie will do and EXACTLY WHO will be able to access the information.
