The Postcardcatfinder is a tool that can help to set better and deeper categories for topography postcards. It was programmed for the Commons:WikiProject Postcards.

Where is this tool?

What can the tool?

• It scan in an image the categories and the structured data (SDC). For both the tool search in Wikidata for the Property:P131 (located in the administrative territorial entity). Also it check for the entity the existing of categories with the postcards of this entity. So it can find from the deepest category the way up to town, regions, state and country.
• It works in all countries. For examples:
  • Postcards of Africa: Algeria or South Africa
  • Postcards of Asia: Japan or India
  • Postcards of Europe: Germany or France
  • Postcards of North America: United States or Mexico
  • Postcards of South America: Chile or Argentinia
• It shows the exiting and not existing Categories, like "Postcards of XYZ" by color.
• With the link "More" you can find more postcards for a category.

What need the tool

The tool need the name of an image or a catogory on Commons. You can insert this in the formular line:

• filename: like "File:mypostcard.jpg" (show an example)
• category: like "Category:Postcards of Berlin" (show an example)

What is the meaning of the colors?

For example this Postcardcatfinder output for the File:Governor's Mansion, Tallahassee, Fla.jpg look like this table. On the original table you can click on every element.

The column "More" shows you the search result for other postcard in this level.

When the Postcardcatfinder show no postcard categories ?

If an image has only categories with no connection to Wikidata and also no structured data then the Postcardcatfinder need more information to find the best postcard category for this image.

Resolution:

1. Add structured data (SDC) to the image
2. Add better categories for buildings, towns and so on.
3. After you add more information to the image, you can the link "Reload page" to reload this image again in the postcardcatfinder.

  This image has only one category with no connect to a wikidata item. So the postcardfinder can not find more information on Wikidata.
• 
  After adding Ludington, Ohio (Q2161723) to the SDC of File:Ludington_State_Bank_interior_c_1915.jpg the tool find the deepest existing Category:Postcards of Mason County, Michigan
