Broken thumbnail purge[edit]

Recording here: Bugzilla31680 - broken purging of thumbnails was caused by HTCP daemon not running, and not restarting automatically. Now fixed. Rd232 (talk) 06:52, 17 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I finally have easy working solution for thumbnail purging[edit]

Several times I uploaded new versions of some files but the latest thumbnails of the files still showed old file versions (and these old file versions were still shown in some articles as well). I tried some proposed solutions for this, like image page purging, but nothing worked. Then, I tried to purge thumbnail itself and I solved the problem. So, if anybody else have problem with the latest thumbnail which show old image version, here is very easy solution for that:

  • 1. right mouse click on latest thumbnail on image page (the one which show old image version instead new)
  • 2. click on "Copy Image Address"
  • 3. paste image address in new window
  • 4. add text ?action=purge on the end of that address
  • 5. press Enter and the thumbnail is purged and it will show the latest image version.

Please fell free to include this solution into purging guideline if it is helpful. PANONIAN (talk) 05:56, 17 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Note, that doesn't actually purge stuff. It causes the squid cache to be bypassed just for that specific request (because the caching servers don't recognize the url with action=purge at the end), it won't affect the image displayed in other places.Bawolff (talk)
Actually, this solution worked in May 2012 (the trick was to purge like this image in every size in which it appear). But now it does not work for some reason. PANONIAN (talk) 09:16, 1 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Alternative to advanced purge[edit]

An alternative procedure to the "advanced purge" listed on this page that accomplishes the same thing but which I find slightly easier to remember

If there are images that are still showing outdated versions after doing this procedure (or the other procedure with thumb.php), I'd appreciate hearing about it (Send me a note on my talk page including what image it is, and what specific size is showing as outdated). Template to Mark Purging Problems[edit]

Image icon purging, trying the tricks described on this help page, has not work for me in a long time. As a result, whenever I upload a second version of one of my pictures

  • the 800×600 preview on the description page still shows the old (first) version;
  • the icons in the File history section of the description page all show the first version, though they have different URLs (older ones with „archive“). They do display the correct (sometimes different) file sizes in MB.
  • the icons of the picture in my Uploads list are all the same and show the first version.

To explain visitors of my pictures what happened I have created a template: {{User:Renardo la vulpo/Template:Displayed Version Obsolete}}. It is called with a date parameter and displays the following text:

“ This medium has a more recent version which however, is not displayed here (state: 2018-02-06). By specifying a different image size you can make the most recent version visible. Details about the problem are here: Help:Purge.”

If you have similar problems, feel free to use or improve the template. Here is a sample picture I retouched to remove a car, which is persistently still there: File:Starnberg, Schloss von Südwesten, 5.jpeg.

The problem with obsolete copies of images seems to have been fixed. And, sorry, the picture with the retouched car was a different one (Schärding, Linzertor, Feldseite, 2.jpeg). -- Renardo la vulpo (talk) 23:32, 20 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Not working with Vector 2022[edit]

Using the new skin, this gadget just appears as * in the pull-down menu, rather than showing the label. Hopefully a simple fix? Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 19:58, 11 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Update null edit instructions[edit]

We see:

A null edit purges the target page (including category and backlink pages) if the page can be edited:
Click the "Edit source" tab at the top of the page, i.e. start the source editor.
Click "Publish changes" at the bottom of the edit box without making any changes.

Well these days, the Publish changes button stays grey. So forget about clicking it.

So maybe say "Add a blank space, then delete it."

That way one can fool the Publish changes button to become blue (clicable.)Jidanni (talk) 06:59, 22 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Purging isn't working[edit]

I just tried to add another new version of File:NB Varina-Enon Bridge; Sign Tree.jpg, but the older version still remains. And the standard "purge then null edit" solution isn't making any difference. ---DanTD (talk) 02:49, 31 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
