English: This slide demonstrates that a proton does not sit calmly in space. Due to thermal interactions, its orientation and position are constantly changing.
The graphic was not produced by simulating the phenomenon that cause the random motion of protons but simply by causing its orientation to vary randomly. The significance of this is that the graphics shown here are all, to some degree, inaccurate. Protons are not balls with a finely demarcated volume, magnetic fields are not arrows, and the motions described happen much faster and with different proportion to one another. The objective of these graphics is not to show an accurate depiction of physical reality but to effectively communicate the dynamics of the concepts described. As with all such models, it is always important to think of them as more qualitative than quantitative. |
