English: The oldest direct evidence of hominid presence in Eurasia comes from Georgia and dates to 1.77 Ma with fossils assigned to H. habilis. The earliest Pleistocene hominid fossils from Java (ca. 1.5 Ma) and China (ca. 1.2 Ma) are assigned to Homo erectus, whereas in Europe, the oldest fossils from Spain (> 1.2 Ma) are attributed to Homo antecessor. In addition to these human fossils, stone artifacts provide widespread evidence for early human presence in Eurasia. However, the Indian subcontinent and adjacent areas lack direct evidence of human fossils. Nonetheless, this vast area between Africa, the Mediterranean and East Asia provides stone artifacts confirming early human presence.
In this map, all published archaeological and paleoanthropological sites in Eurasia with reliable Early Pleistocene age determinations, grouped by magnetostratigraphical units, are given. Where several stratigraphic levels are covered at the same site, the oldest level is indicated. Data from the African continent are excluded on this map. |
