Summary[edit]
DescriptionPrint of Lansquenets and Turks at Museum Boijmans.webm |
English: In 2010 Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen acquired two exceptional sets of coloured woodcuts from a private collection. In this video Peter van der Coelen, curator of the collection Prints and Drawings, tells about this exciting acquisition. The prints date from around 1530 and were made by the German artists Sebald Beham, Erhard Schön, Niklas Stoer and Peter Flötner. One set consists of twenty sheets of ‘lansquenets’, Swiss and German mercenaries who played a major role in the wars being fought at that time. They were conspicuous in their flamboyant dress. The second set, eighteen pictures of Turkish soldiers and their commanders, is of immense cultural-historical value. The Ottoman Empire was in the ascendant. Turkish forces advanced towards the heart of Europe, laying siege to Vienna in 1529. These prints reflect the prevailing fear of the powerful enemy and fascination with the exotically-clad soldiers on horseback or riding a dromedary. |
