Description
Français : Vue d’artiste de l'exceptionnelle comète rocheuse C/2014 S3 (PANSTARRS).Des observations effectuées au moyen du Très Grand Télescope de l'ESO et du Télescope Canada France Hawaï, indiquent que C/2014 S3 (PANSTARRS) est le tout premier objet doté d'une orbite cométaire à longue période découvert à ce jour, qui présente les caractéristiques d'un astéroïde primitif du Système Solaire interne. Cette découverte devrait livrer d'importantes informations concernant la formation du Système Solaire. Du fait que cet objet ait passé la plus grande partie de sa vie loin du système solaire interne, il a très peu souffert de collisions et sa surface ne fait apparaitre que peu ou pas de cratères. Comme il s’est formé dans la même région que la Terre, il est principalement rocheux et n’a par conséquent qu’une activité cométaire très limitée.
