| Description |
Nederlands: Gijs van der Sande vertelt in het kader van het Oral History Project Breda van Stadsarchief Breda zijn verhaal over de vlucht. Na de Duitse inval op 10 mei 1940 in ons land, kreeg het Nederlandse leger hulp van Franse troepen die via België richting Breda trokken met de bedoeling de oprukkende Duitse troepen te verslaan. De Franse legerleiding veronderstelde dat de stad, die in de vuurlinie lag, bij gevechten zwaar getroffen zou worden en adviseerde de burgemeester van Breda om de inwoners te evacueren. Op 12 mei 1940 gelastte de burgemeester dat iedereen de stad moest verlaten. Het merendeel van de Bredase bevolkings gaf gehoor aan deze oproep. Achteraf beschouwd, was deze massale evacuatie, waarbij tientallen doden vielen, zinloos. |
