Viewing ogg files on iPad

How to play Ogg Theora/Vorbis files directly on iPad?

When I try I get the message 'open with Dropbox' for example with Surya namaskar. Any suggestion? Wouter (talk) 22:57, 21 March 2013 (UTC)

No audio/video with encrypted connection?

Is it just me, or does audio/video not work with an encrypted (https) connection? On my side (Mac OS X 10.6, Safari 5.1, Wikipedia with standard settings / standard skin) the player works fine with http-connection, but fails to load any audio or video file over https. Order of operating systems

Why is the order of the links opositly to the circulation of these OS? If most users use Windows and least use Unix, wouldn't it be a good idea to place the WIndows Button on the Top of all, followed by the MacOS one? --93.221.189.56 18:31, 12 February 2013 (UTC)

Playing ogg video on current firefox

clicking this preview does not do anything for me

As the article suggests, my current FF 19.0.2 (Win XP) should be able to play, say, File:Uscoastaurora iss 20120208 2HD web.ogv without further measures. But when I click the preview image, nothing happens. What prerequisites do I need to meet in order to play ogg video inside Firefox ? -- Juergen 91.52.168.227 23:09, 12 March 2013 (UTC)

Link to file origin

With the newly modified Java applet for playback ogg files, I cannot get a backlink with Win 7 when I open an .ogg file, that is clicking on the MENU I do not get it as a link anymore as some month before (only "Title"). With parameter |thumb

The Java player

When I try watching File:Apelsin spreadthesign.ogv in IE8 the Java player (which doesn't work for me) appears, while when I try watching File:How Open Access Empowered a 16-Year-Old to Make Cancer Breakthrough.ogv, it just prompts me to download the file. Why is there a difference?

Given that the Java player doesn't work, I'd suggest prompting for download on every video in unsupported browsers. Skalman (talk) 11:49, 21 October 2013 (UTC)

Wrong character encoding of URL provided to media player

The video File:Hallandsåsen_TBM_model_-_01.webm won't play in the online Commons media player. The media player opens, but nothing is shown. In Firefox or Chromium, I can right click on the (empty) video area and select "Show video" or "Open video in new tab", respectively, which will let the internet browser open the media file directly without the Commons media player. However, doing so gives a 404 Not Found, because the URL (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/transcoded/0/08/Hallands%C3%83%C2%A5sen_TBM_model_-_01.webm/Hallands%C3%83%C2%A5sen_TBM_model_-_01.webm.480p.webm) is probably not encoded in the right way. Replacing "Ã¥" with "å" in the URL seems to help. I guess that this is why the Commons media player isn't able to play the file. The problem can also be seen with other files with non ASCII file names, for example File:Gierfähre Rathen.webm. --Luen (talk) 13:21, 3 November 2013 (UTC)

video test page

I don't think its appropriate to link this from the help page, but in case its useful to anyone, I'll mention here. I've created a page: http://tools.wmflabs.org/bawolff/video_test.htm which tests browser video support (of Free formats). There's a number of videos on that page. If any of them play then in theory videos should work on commons. If stuff works on that page but not on commons, then its a bug. Bawolff (talk) 01:56, 30 January 2014 (UTC)

toollabs:bawolff is a perfectly legit WMF interwiki from my POV. However, Chrome "click to play" fails miserably starting to play without my permission, Chrome dislikes the for W2K or Java 6 compatibility last free JRE 6.45 (existing security fixes only available for paying customers), and looking at the page over GPRS is NOT RECOMMENDED. Details (current Chrome on current Windows 7 64 over slow GPRS mobile):

• Commons video: Empty. Inspect element: visbility hidden. Presumably as it should be.
• Native ogg: Player shown. Click to play: No effect, hangs at begin, nothing clickable (buttons don't work.)
• Native WebM: Started without permission, stop+restart work, hangs at 0:09, seek/play from 0 to 0:44 fails.
• Cortado ogg: Started without permission, stop+restart work, hangs at hangs at 0%, clobbers Chrome scrolling, very evil.
• Object ogg 1: Started without permission, stop+restart barely work, hangs at 00:00, seek/play from 0 to 5:06 has no effect.
• Object ogg 2: Started without permission, hangs after stop, hangs at 00:05, seek/play from 0 to 0:24 has no effect.
• Object WebM: Waits for permission, hangs (click has no effect.)

No sound for embedded video?

Why does the embedded player show my video (on the left) without sound? When I use Google Chrome to play the "Original file" directly by the browser, it can play sound. But when I use the embedded player or to play any of the download varieties generated by Commons, the sound is disabled. Did I do anything wrong with my video file? Yeah, I have the same problems. I tried to convert OPUS (audio) to Vorbis, that works as it should with Mplayer and Windows Media Player on my box, but fails for MPC-HC. I also tried WebM, but that was worse. My best suggestion based on these tests, avoid OPUS like a plague in 2014, it is very far from ready for prime time. –Be..anyone (talk) 12:49, 19 March 2014 (UTC)

I changed to use on of the "online" options suggested by Commons instead of the Windows options to convert my original file. I uploaded now and all derivatives seem working with audio now. Not sure was it from me using a different conversion tool, or Commons changed something in the upload process that made this problem disappeared. Thanks. Z22 (talk) 18:02, 20 March 2014 (UTC)

It was from the different conversion tool. Your original file had an opus audio track, which currently isn't supported on our site (I'm hoping in about two months with the upgrade to unbuntu trusty, that that will change). Bawolff (talk) 03:31, 8 July 2014 (UTC)

I do not use opus but I use direct conversion software that I bought for $300. It directly transcodes .mp4 to .ogv with sound, although it takes a long time. Doorknob 747 (talk) 14:32, 4 May 2015 (UTC)

about the videos format

It would be easier if while playing any videos , it would ask in what video extension the user wants to play. So the user could just play it easily. And the samething would be for sound files. Learnerktm (talk) 02:24, 18 November 2014 (UTC)

They have the VLC app for the Windows Phone 8.1. I downloaded it on my Nokia Lumia Icon, it works in playing videos or sound files like .ogg and. ogv, that are saved on the phones memory, but no direct support for WebM or playing directly from the web yet. According to Commons:File types#Sound, the preferred file type is .ogg. I suggest you try that. OTOH, looking at the "Transcode status" section of those files, maybe you just have to wait until they have been transcoded. -- Michael Bednarek (talk) 09:33, 17 April 2015 (UTC)

Should be updated with info regarding WebM support

@Yann: Surely it's convenient, however it will also degrade the quailty of the video to an unacceptable level. eg. 120 Mbps VP8 (1080p 120fps) to ~5 Mbps VP9 or 120 Mbps VP8 (4k 30fps)to ~20 Mbps VP9. Cheers Tomskyhaha (talk) 00:45, 8 May 2019 (UTC)

IMO the quality of the video is poor (shaking, contrast, etc.) regardless of the encoding. And 120 fps is useless here. Regards, Yann (talk) 04:38, 8 May 2019 (UTC)

WAV and FLAC players

Subtitle formatting

Video not playing on Android phone

When I click "Play media" button it's loading but after the loading it's showing black picture and the progress bar not moving (e.g. stuck at 0:00). My internet speed is 35 Mbps.
