The Folger Shakespeare Library is an independent research library located in Washington, D.C., United States. It has the world's largest collection of the printed works of William Shakespeare, and is a primary repository for rare materials from the early modern period (1500–1750). The images being contributed to Wikimedia Commons showcase these objects, taken by professional object photographers.
Project history[edit]
In July 2012, Jim Kuhn proposed that the Folger Shakespeare Library make an image and metadata donation to Wikimedia Commons. Kaldari and Sarah Stierch volunteered to help. The project was put on hold, however, pending the appointment of a new Director of Digital Access at the Folger. In October 2015, Eric Johnson, the new Director of Digital Access, contacted Kaldari to restart the process. In March 2016, the Folger sent the first images and metadata to Kaldari. On May 4, 2016, the upload of the first set of images (Category:Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (Folger)) was completed.
