English: Mithila ( Sanskrit: मिथिला, mithilā) was a city in Ancient India, the capital of the Videha Kingdom. The name Mithila is also commonly used to refer to the Videha Kingdom itself, as well as to the modern-day territories that fall within the ancient boundaries of Videha. The city of Mithila has been identified as modern day Janakpur in Dhanusa district of Nepal.
हिन्दी : मिथिला या मिथिलांचल प्राचीन भारत में एक राज्य था. माना जाता है कि यह वर्तमान उत्तरी बिहार और नेपाल की तराई का इलाका है जिसे मिथिला या मिथिलांचल के नाम से जाना जाता था. मिथिला की लोकश्रुति कई सदियों से चली आ रही है जो अपनी बौद्धिक परंपरा के लिये भारत और भारत के बाहर जाना जाता रहा है. इस इलाके की प्रमुख भाषा मैथिली है. धार्मिक ग्रंथों में सबसे पहले इसका उल्लेख रामायण में मिलता है
മലയാളം : രാമായണത്തിലെ വിദേഹപുരിയുടെ തലസ്ഥാനമാണ് മിഥില. സീതയുടെ പിതാവായ ജനകൻ ഭരിച്ചിരുന്നത് ഇവിടെയാണ്. പ്രാചീനകാലത്ത് ഇവിടം വിദ്യയുടേയും സംസ്കാരത്തിന്റേയും തലസ്ഥാനമഅയിരുന്നു. വിശ്വാമിത്രൻ, വാൽമീകി, ജനകൻ, യാജ്ഞ്യവൽക്യൻ, ഗൗതമൻ തുടങ്ങിയ ആചാര്യന്മാരാൽ പരിപോഷിപ്പിക്കപ്പെട്ട മിഥിലയിലെ വിശ്വവിദ്യാലയം വിക്രമശിലയുടെ തകർച്ചയോടെ പ്രശസ്തിയിലേക്ക് കുതിച്ചു കയറി. വേദോപനിഷത്തുകൾക്കും, സ്മൃതികൾക്കും പ്രശസ്തമായ ഈ കേന്ദ്രം മൂന്നു ശതാബ്ദത്തിലധികം നിലകൊണ്ടു. മിഥിലയിൽ വിശ്വാമിത്ര-ഗൗതമ-യാജ്ഞ്യവൽക്യ-വാൽമീക്യാശ്രമങ്ങളുണ്ടായിരുന്നുവെന്നു കരുതപ്പെടുന്നു. ജങ്കരാജക്കന്മാരുടെ പുരോഹിതന്മാർ ഗൗതമവംശക്കാരായിരുന്നു. ജനകപൂരിൽ കപിലേശ്വരം, കൂപേശ്വരം, ശീലനാഥം, കല്യാണേശ്വരം, ജലേശ്വരം, ക്ഷീരേശ്വരം, മിഥിലേശ്വരം തുടങ്ങി നിരവധി ശിവക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളും രാമാ-ജാനകി-ദശരഥക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളുമുണ്ട്.
