Dust devil tracks on Mars is a category where dark lines are visible against a lighter background. On Mars they are caused by giant dust devils removing a thin, light toned covering on the ground. After the light dust is taken away, the dark surface below stands out. These tracks can be straight or curved. After a period of maybe months light dust will cover the tracks. New ones can then form new patterns. Dust devils have been seen from orbit and even from the ground. They cast large shadows. Movies have even been created by putting pictures together. At times they have gone over spacecraft on the ground and cleaned their solar panels in the process. The rover Mars opportunity has survived over 11 years because its solar panels have been blown free of dust many times. it was designed to only last 3 months.
