Carl Hübner gehört der Düsseldorfer Malschule an. Sein Bild über das Elend der schlesischen Weber aus dem Jahr 1845 war so erfolgreich, dass er sogleich mindestens zwei weitere Versionen anfertigte. Bekannt sind bisher die Fassungen im Landesmuseum Bonn, im Museum Kunstpalast Düsseldorf und die kleinste, aus dem Jahr 1846, im Deutschen historischen Museum in Berlin. Letztere stammte aus dem früheren Privatbesitz von Walter Ulbricht.

Friedrich Engels schrieb über dieses Bild, es habe .. „wirksamer für den Sozialismus agitiert als 100 Flugschriften.“ Das Gemälde zeigt einige schlesische Weber, die einem Verleger (Zwischenhändler) gewebtes Leinen bringen, und stellt sehr eindrucksvoll dem kaltherzigen Reichtum auf der einen Seite die verzweifelte Armut auf der anderen gegenüber. Dieses Gemälde ist alsbald nach seiner Entstehung in mehreren Städten Deutschlands ausgestellt worden und hat, so Friedrich Engels weiter, „verständlicherweise so manches Gemüt für soziale Ideen empfänglich gemacht”.

Zur Darstellung der ungeheuren Distanz des Zwischenhändlers von den armen Webern benutzt Hübner ein geradezu geniales Stilmittel: Er gestaltet dessen Haltung nach Duplessis' Bildnis Ludwigs XVI., des von der französischen Revolution hingerichteten letzten Königs des Ancien Regime, eine versteckte aber für gebildete Menschen der damaligen Zeit lesbare Botschaft.
