As work begins on a controversial new marina on Waiheke Island, protestors take to kayaks, flying the Tino Rangatiratanga flag (also known as the national Māori flag).

Description
English: Although much of the opposition focused on the environmental impact of the Kennedy Point Marina at Putiki Bay, the rights of local iwi (a Maori social unit, community or tribe) to be properly consulted were also central to the protest. A 2019 petition against the marina gathered 11,000 signatures, despite the fact that, in 2018, only 9063 people lived on the island. An online petition in 2021 opposing the marina amassed 25,000 signatures. More than 1200 came from Waiheke iwi Ngāti Pāoa, a large chunk of the total iwi membership of 3600. Many live off the island.
