Het wetenschappelijk onderzoek dat aan het AUP voorafging, richtte zich op het vaststellen van de minimale benodigde oppervlakten per inwoner van woon-, werk- en ontspanningsgebieden. Kenmerken van het AUP zijn de sterke opdeling van wijken door groenstroken, een groene wig in het westen tot aan de Sloterplas, het Amsterdamse Bos als recreatiegebied en de vele sportterreinen. Plan Tuinstad Slotermeer is hiervan een nadere uitwerking.

The scientific research that preceded the AUP focused on determining the minimum area that each inhabitant required for living, working and relaxation. The AUP’s characteristic features include the distinct subdivision of districts by greenbelts, a wedge of greenery extending westwards to the Sloterplas lake, the Amsterdamse Bos woodland park as a recreation area and the many sports fields. The Design for Slotermeer Garden Suburb is an elaboration of the basic plan.
