bJ3 ELEMENTARY PRINCIPLES. 23 sure against the piston may be reduced to 1 2 pound per squareinch above absolute zero of pressure with the very best condenserequipment, or to 3 pounds per square inch with an ordinary equip-ment. Keeping in mind that the temperature of steam dependsin some way on the rate of vibration of the molecules of thesteam, and its pressure depends on the rate or number of molec-ular impacts on the containing vessel, we readily see, when steamis deprived of 90% of its heat, and its volume reduced to 1/1500of the volume it possessed when entering the condenser, thatthere must necessarily be a great reduction of pressure. Theunavoidable pressure in the condenser would be that due tothe vapor of the feed-water if there were no leakage of airthrough the stuffing-boxes and the joints of the condenserand exhaust-piping, and no air and other non-condensible gasesin the feed-water. If these gases accumulated, it is evidentthat the back pressure might finally be greater t
