Summary[edit]

Description
English: The atlas moth is known as the largest in the world, it is found mainly in India, these insects are widely used in industry, since they are considered good producers of silk, these are some interesting facts about the moth.

• The one seen in the image corresponds to a male atlas moth, it has a size of approximately 26 cm in wingspan (from wing to wing), it is considered the lepidopter with the largest wing surface area which corresponds to 400 square cm. • It is considered a moth because its body is covered by small hairs and it is active at night. • It has the scientific name Attacus atlas, it is popularly known as the Atlas butterfly or snakehead butterfly (a snake head is observed at the apex of its upper wings), in this country it is bred for silk extraction, although it is not considered a large producer of silk and the silk it produces is considered to closely resemble wool. • As in most insects, the female is larger, but is more susceptible to being attacked, since it is considered a poor flyer. On the contrary, males usually fly several kilometers in search of a partner for mating.

• These insects in their adult phase, that is, in their butterfly form, cannot feed, since their mouth organ is atrophied, therefore, they are only 5 days old once they emerge from the pupa.
