llluslration from the Author The world-famous statue by Daniel Chester French as it faces the_entrancedoor of the Lincoln Memorial The apartment in which the statue isplaced is so large and so well proportionedthat few realize the immensity of the figureseated so easily in its mighty curule chair. The hall is seventy feet long, sixty wide, andsixty in height. The statue does not seem toolarge, but if the seated figure could standerect, it would be close to thirty-eight feettall. Frenchs first model of the Lincoln statuewas a clay creation less than three feet inheight. From this he produced a workingmodel five feet high. It was this second tiful work in marble. Each brother was alsoa part of one of the most amazing teamsknown to the art world. For these brotherscould work together as one man—somethingso rare among sculptors as to be practicallyunknown. Their teamworK was so perfectthat not even a great sculptor can detectwhere the work of one brother ends and thework of another begin
