by telling you that I spend asmuch time as possible here. Icome here before 7 in the morn-ing, and I do not leave until5. This is my job—watching thestatue—and I love it just asany man loves his job. Tolerant Like Abe Like Lincoln, he is tolerant, eventhough tourists pencil their nameson the gleaming walls. Every night I have themwashed off. The people reallydont mean any harm. They justdont think about what theyredoing. I am very careful that everyname is erased, for I find thatwhen one person sees a namewritten on the wall, he immedi-ately writes his own name aboveit. Unimportant, He Says When he learned that I wasgoing to use his name in this story,Clapham was a little worried, andhe said: I wish you wouldnt. Afterall, I am a very unimportantperson. This (and he indicatedwith a gesture all that heguarded) is important, but I amonly a small man with a job todo. I think Clapham forgot that theman of marble had love, compassion and understanding for millions of smaller men than he.
