Description
English: Eleven turbine blades samples that showcase the repair process developed by MTU engines to send damaged blades back into service. The blades shown are high-pressure internally-cooled turbine nozzle guide vanes (stators).
  1. Damaged blade before treatment
  2. After removal of cover and baffles, and stripping of thermal barrier coating
  3. After chemical stripping of bond coating (MCrAIY) and heat tint test
  4. After fluoride-ion cleaning [note that the fracture would disqualify the actual blade for re-use in an engine - this is a sample shown for demonstration purposes]
  5. After brazing process (cooling holes now filled)
  6. After recontouring by grinding and fluorescent penetrant inspection
  7. After vacuum plasma of the new bond coating (MCrAIY)
  8. After atmospheric plasma spraying of the thermal barrier coating
  9. After laser drilling of cooling holes
  10. After addition of cover and baffles, airflow check, and final inspection

At the Paris Air Show 2013 where these blades were exhibited, MTU quoted a repair price of $1,700 per blade, which they compared to a quoted $12,300 price for the new part.
