Description |
Plate engravings illustrating personifications of 'Inspiration' and 'Idea'. The figure of Inspiration is a young man from whose breast a glittering ray darts set against a background of a starry sky (symbolising the Grace of God inspiring the mind). His hair is knotted and mixed with serpents (representing the sinner who can only have brutish thoughts) and he looks up to heaven (symbolisng elevation of the mind). He holds a naked sword, the point on the ground in one hand and and a sunflower or Heliotrope in the other (representing turning towards the Sun/God for inspiration). The figure of Idea is a lady who is naked save for a white veil (symbolising purity of ideas). She has a flame on her head and wears a golden crown set with jewels (symbolising the perfection of ideas). She has a feeding baby at her breast (the image of nature) and points down to the world (as inferior). Rare Books |
