Manuel de Olim Perestrelo (1854-1929), fundador da emblemática casa “Perestrellos Photographos”, nascido em Machico a 28 de setembro de 1854, iniciou a sua atividade profissional em 1876 como funcionário do estúdio de João Francisco Camacho (1833-1898) e, posteriormente, em 1879, abriu o seu próprio estúdio fotográfico na sua residência situada à rua do Mosteiro Novo (atualmente rua do Seminário). A 1 de novembro de 1909, Manuel de Olim Perestrelo arrendou o atelier pertencente ao fotógrafo Augusto Maria Camacho (1838-1927), irmão do anterior, situado em terrenos do Exército Português junto ao Palácio de São Lourenço, na rua Hermenegildo Capelo (atual avenida Arriaga), espaço hoje ajardinado e com a estátua de João Abel de Freitas (1893-1948), onde abriu as portas com a designação “Photographia M.O. Perestrellos Sucessores de A. Camacho”. Entre 1910 e 1922, e já em sociedade com os filhos, a firma designou-se “M. O. Perestrello & Filhos”. Ao longo dos anos, seguiram-se outras denominações até à conhecida “Perestellos Photographos Lda.” com a qual operaram entre 1937 e 2000.
