English: ProtoDESI is a pathfinding instrument for the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument. DESI is a multi-fiber spectrograph installed on the 4-meter Mayall Telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory in 2018 to explore the nature of dark energy. DESI aims to determine whether the accelerating expansion of the Universe is consistent with a cosmological constant, measure any time evolution of the Dark Energy, and search for any failures of general relativity. The 4-pinhole fiducials will enable ProtoDESI to precisely move fiber positioners to collect light from astronomical objects. Parker Fagrelius is seen working on ProtoDESI.
