Las dos nubes de Magallanes son galaxias irregulares satélites de nuestra galaxia de la Vía Láctea.

La Gran Nube tiene una dimensión de 10,75º x 9.17º, una magnitud aparente de +0,9, una distancia de nuestra estrella el Sol de 157.000 años luz y un radio de 1.900 años luz. Posee 10.000 millones de estrellas y contiene la Nebulosa de la Tarántula (30 Dorado).

La Pequeña Nube tiene una dimensión de 5º 20' x 3º 5', una magnitud aparente de +2,7 y a una distancia del Sol de 200.000 años luz. Posee en promedio 3.000 millones de estrellas. A 2º 45' hacia el W de la misma se encuentra el cúmulo globular y segundo más brillante de los dos hemisferios celestes: 47 Tucanae.

Desde nuestras latitudes (-37º) y observando hacia el horizonte Sur, tanto la Gran Nube como la Pequeña Nube de Magallanes se la ve pasar por el meridiano del lugar (culminación) a una altura de 55º. También desde la latitud -18º hasta -90º se la puede ver todas las noches claras del año. Ver las tablas de las horas de paso de ambas nubes insertas en la imagen. Esta altura es aproximada para la costa bonaerense y el litoral argentino.
