Artigo com, entre outros, um estudo dos fósseis calcários de São Vicente, no lado norte da ilha, que levantavam a hipótese da erupção vulcânica submarina, na sequência do que a Madeira emergiu do mar,  ter ocorrido Época Terciária, como refere depois o naturalista John MacGillivray (1822-1867), in Narrative of the Voyage of H.M.S. Rattlesnake, Commanded By the Late Captain Owen Stanley, R.N., F.R.S. Etc. During the Years 1846-1850. – Including Discoveries and Surveys in New Guinea, the Louisiade Archipelago, Etc. to Which Is Added the Account of Mr. E.B. Kennedy’s Expedition for the Exploration of the Cape York Peninsula. Londres, T. & W. Boone, 1852, Vol. I, p. 13. James Macaulay, também nesse ano de 1840, escreveu o anúncio na imprensa inglesa da edição do álbum de Andrew Picken (1815-1845), Madeira illustrated. 1840. With a description of the Island, de que foi o editor, embora álbum só terminado no verão de 1841, depois de uma segunda estadia do pintor na Ilha.
