| Description |
English: Mural, Falls Road, Belfast [9] Another mural on the 'International Wall' this features a tribute to Liam MacCarthy. Born in London in 1853 he set up a box making business and later became a councillor in Peckham. Outside of this MacCarthy was always a keen player of gaelic sports and the mural depicts his purchase of a silver cup based on the design of an ancient Gaelic Meither (Irish loving cup) which was offered to the Central Council of the Gaelic Athletic Association at Croke Park, Dublin. It was gratefully accepted as the trophy awarded annually, and in all perpetuity to the winners of the Senior All-Ireland Hurling Championship, and is known as the 'Liam MacCarthy Cup'. |
