Description
English: This animated png illustrates the principal curvature in a point that travels on a meridian from the equatorial plane (with radius parameter 'a') to the poles and back.

The flattening of the earth is exaggerated by a factor of ~25.

File Format Note: The original scene has 3600 frames, which would assemble to an apng of ~900mb, hence every 20th frame was picked and a delay of 1 second per frame was chosen. An alternative is File:Illustration of principal curvatures on an oblate spheroid (ellipsoid of revolution).webm which encodes all frames, but renders poorly on browsers that do not support alpha transparency in HTML5 videos (in this case: webm matroska container with vp8 yuv video and alpha channel track).
