The north end of Walkergate circa. 1900. The tall building in the distance on the right-hand side was the Public Rooms, built in 1840. These rooms were converted in 1935 to form the Regal cinema, which is now demolished and the site is housing. All the houses on the left were demolished in the widening of Walkergate in the 1960s and one of the properties on the right was demolished to make way for Walkergate School in 1906. Modern traffic levels have caused deterioration of parts of this ancient road.
