| Inscription | Information board: KRIEGSGEFANGENENLAGER DÜLMEN // 1914–1918 // Im Winter 1914/15, wenige Monate nach Beginn des Ersten Weltkriegs, wurde in der Sythener Mark bei Hausdülmen ein Kriegsgefangenenlager errichtet. Hier waren während des Kriegs etwas 10.000 Kriegsgefangene – vor allem Franzosen, Belgier, Briten und Russen – untergebracht. // Das 50 ha große Lager glich einer kleinen Stadt: Es verfügte über einen eigenen Bahnanschluss mit Poststation, ein Pumpenhaus, Stromversorgung, ein Lazarett, eine Desinfektionsanstalt, Baderäume, Wirtschaftsbaracken, eine Strafanstalt mit Arrestzelle, eine Theaterbaracke für kulturelle Veranstaltungen und Räumlichkeiten zu Abhaltung von Gottesdiensten. Untergebracht waren die Gefangenen in nach Nationalität getrennten Baracken mit jeweils bis zu 130 Personen. // Die Kriegsgefangenen wurden vor allem als Arbeitskräfte in den Industriebetrieben der Stadt Dülmen und in der Landwirtschaft eingesetzt. // Als Wache dienten ältere bzw. nicht voll kriegstaugliche Soldaten des 27. Landsturm-Infanterie-Ersatzbataillons. // Die Behandlung von Kriegsgefangenen war in der Haager Konvention geregelt, deren Bestimmungen auch im Dülmener Lager eingehalten wurden. Die Versorgungs- und Ernährungssituation der Gefangenen im Lager verschlechterte sich wie für die deutsche Zivilbevölkerung mit dem Hungerwinter 1916/17. Hier starben vor allem russische Kriegsgefangene, da diese im Gegensatz zu den Gefangenen aus westeuropäischen Ländern weniger Unterstützung aus ihrer Heimat erhielten. // Im April 1915 war ein Friedhof eingeweiht worden. Dieser wurde 1967 an die Friedensallee bei Hausdülmen verlegt. // Die letzten russischen Kriegsgefangenen verließen im Sommer 1919 das Lager, das daraufhin bis 1921 als Heimkehrerlager für deutsche Soldaten genutzt wurde. // Heute ist das Lager, dessen Fläche zu einem großen Teil vom Silbersee II bedeckt ist, im Landschaftsbild nicht mehr sichtbar.
