Gram negative cocci bacteria viewed under 100x oil immersion microscope

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Gram staining is a process used to differentiate between two types of bacteria. Gram positive bacteria have a thick layer of peptidoglycan outside of their cell membrane. Gram negative bacteria have a thin layer of peptidoglycan followed by a lipopolysaccharide layer. For the most part, gram positive bacteria are harmless. Most gram negative bacteria are pathogenic due to the lipopolysaccharide layer. These bacteria were swabbed from the walkie-talkie of a security guard at my school.
