German officer from the Condor Legion instructing Nationalist infantry soldiers, Ávila, January 1939. The Condor Legion was a unit made up from both air force and land army of Nazi Germany, especially created to serve and collaborate with Francoist Spain during the Spanish Civil War. The Legion is infamously known because its massive number of war crimes committed, especially those carried out by the Luftwaffe, which made effective the first air strike against innocent civilians during the bombing of Guernica. During the war, the soldiers wore the same uniforms than the Francoist troops. It is widely accepted that Franco couldn’t have won the war without the Condor Legion and Nazi Germany’s aid.
