This was one of a number of paintings in a special exhibit on the artistic interchange between between Flemish and Portuguese painters in the 1400's. It was a very good, informative exhibit but I particularly like this painting because of the little dragon rising up out of the chalice. Note: Saint John the Evangelist sometimes is depicted with serpents (or dragons) rising from a chalice. |
