Summary[edit]

Description
English: Two soldiers standing knee deep in liquid mud in a trench on the Somme. They have bowl-shaped shovels with long handles, which they are using to try and scoop away some of the mud. It must have been backbreaking work.

Both of these men are wearing the sleeveless leather jerkins with a blanket lining which were introduced late in 1916. The photograph must, therefore, have been taken no earlier than winter 1916.
[Original reads: 'Clearing away mud on the Somme.']
