Summary[edit]

Description
English: Cavalry on the move, during World War I. A line of relaxed cavalrymen are crossing a small, narrow bridge. The wintry landscape is clearly visible. Two foot soldiers sit with their jerry cans and watch the cavalry pass. A crucifix at the side of the road has been re-erected, possibly for this photograph, amidst the bombed-out landscape.

When war broke out in 1914, there was as yet no tested and effective alternative to using cavalry in war. It was not until later in World War I that tanks began to be introduced. By the Second World War cavalry was all but redundant.
[Original reads: 'OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPH TAKEN ON THE BRITISH WESTERN FRONT. Cavalry crossing a temporary bridge.']
