| Description |
Captain Bill Aalto Spanish Communist Party identity photograph (made the 4th January, 1938). He was an American brigadist that fought during the Spanish Civil War in the Abraham Lincoln Battalion, 15th International Brigade from early 1937 until 1938. He raided an enemy position saving the life of 300 Republicans. When World War II exploded, he enlisted in the American Army. However, while training in Camp Ritchie, Maryland, Aalto saw someone drop a live grenade and lunged for it. Before he could throw it away, the bomb exploded, severing his arm at the wrist. After the act of bravery, he studied poetry at Columbia University.
