English: An illustration from the Encyclopaedia Biblica, a 1903 publication which is now in the public domain.
for article "Stater". Image of a silver stater from Antioch. The front shows the head of Octavian, with the title 'Kaisaros Sebastou' (= Greek for 'Caesar Augustus'). On the back is an anthropomorphic figure of 'Fortune' - specifically the fortune of Antioch - holding a palm branch. At Fortune's feet is a depiction of Orontes - the river-god - as if swimming in water. This appears to be based on a style created by the sculptor Eutychides, shortly after Antioch was founded (compare File:EutychidesAntiocha.jpg). |
