Summary[edit]

Description
English: Three men working to make themselves an underground shelter or dugout. One man is sawing wood to frame the entrance, while another in the background appears to be salvaging more wood. The third man seems to be heating water over a small brazier made out of a bucket with holes in it.

On the Allied side there was very little attempt to organise comfortable shelter for troops near the front-line trenches and soldiers often made their own makeshift shelters. Away from the line, civilian houses and barns were used, as well as Nissen huts, tents and even railway carriages.
