English: The castle of Brucoli, located in the homonymous village, was commissioned by King John II of Aragon and donated to Queen Joan of Aragon. The latter, in 1468, granted the construction to Giovanni Cabastida, a chamberlain from Barcelona, who had it in concession for three generations.
The reason why such a fortified structure was built was mainly to protect itself against an exponential growth of the Turks. In the century following the building of the castle, the Barbaresque incursions of the Turks were added to those coming from the northern coasts of Africa, which among other things is linked to the legend of the Patron Saint. The castle with Etna in the distance The fortress arose at the mouth of the canal-port not only for defensive purposes, but also to control maritime trade and keep the grain reserves flowing there. So for the protection of those traffics and the small village that stood at his feet, the castle assumed a role of fundamental protection. |
