Summary[edit]

Description
English: soldiers stand next to a large gun, on an extremely muddy road. A vehicle, possibly for pulling the gun, stands just off to the right. The scene also includes a few men on bicycles in the foreground, and a long line of horses moving in single file.

Large guns or heavy artillery were used extensively during World War I, they were invaluable in trench warfare because of the trajectory at which they could fire. They could be aimed 'into' the trenches whereas lighter guns would fire in a more or less straight line.
