Summary[edit]

Description
English: British Third Army positions at Montebrehain, France, 1918, during World War I. First section of a panoramic view.

The writing on the front of this photograph reads: 'Third Army/Panorama No. 570 made on 12 - 8 - 17 from F 15 d.85.69. / including a field view of 60 from about E.N.E to S.E/ Approximate Scale of Degrees (1 degree equals 9 inches) / Guisancourt farm/ Le Catelet (Trees in Fortications [sic] ) / La Sabloniere B.4.b.55.60./ Premont Church U.28.d 80.82/ Guillemont/ Beaurevoir B.8.b.'
Montbrehain in Picardy formed part of the route for the Allies' successful main offensive in September and October 1918, where parts of the Third, Fourth and First British Armies joined forces with French troops to advance through the Hindenburg line. As the guidelines on the photograph suggest, attacks were carefully co-ordinated and troops positions had to be concealed from the enemy.
British forces dug in at Montbrehain, Picardy during the Allied push towards the heavily fortified Hindenburg line in September and October 1918. Parts of the Fourth, Third and First British armies joined up with the left of the French First army and pushed through Montbrehain en route to Ecourt St Quentin, near Cambrai, where battle was to rage for several days.
[Original reads: 'Third Army. Panorama No.570 made on 12-8-17 .']
