Summary[edit]

Description
English: Women salvaging chairs, Nesle, France, during World War I. The ruins of the canal bridge at Nesle with two elderly French women hurrying over a makeshift plank bridge. They are both carrying chairs, possibly salvaged from the building in the background. Nesle was one of the villages caught in the German advance of March 1918 and recaptured by the Allies in the autumn. The photograph is likely to have been taken late in 1918.

One officer wrote in his diary for 23 March 1918, 'This morning the Boche got through Ham and advanced towards Nesle..in the afternoon we counter-attacked and pushed the Boche back. Nesle has been badly shelled. The country is full of refugees from Nesle and Ham..'
[Original reads: 'The bridge over the canal at Nesle which the Germans destroyed.']
